Mixed feelings for Team ROARK at the first day of the 2011 Worlds Melges 32
Palma de Mallorca, Spain - The opening day of the 2011 Melges 32 World Championship, hosted by Real Club Nautico de Palma (RCNP), was remarkable. Far beneath the air traffic and clouds over Palma's very busy airport, the bay had brilliant sunny skies, 10-12 knots of breeze and lumpy seas to set the stage for Day 1. After an hour postponement the boats left the dock to sail the first races of this Melges 32 World Championship.
First race Team ROARK had a rather bad start but in the first upwind leg Team ROARK managed to fight back and rounded the first upwind mark as fifth. This was quite promising for this developing team. Great upwind boatspeed and nice tactics but then from there we lost our gain to a large group behind us. Now in the overcrowded part of the race, Team ROARK was swallowed up and we finished at a disappointing 16th place. Second race was almost a copy of the first race. Bad start, good recovery in the first upwind leg, 7th at the first mark but due to two penalty’s for pumping and touching the mark we lost our position and finished 23rd. Team ROARK is 21st overall now but there is still a small gap to the teams in front of us.
Even lighter air is in the forecast for Wednesday, however racing is expected to begin on schedule.
